Daily Participation comprises 1/3 of each student’s grade (40% for 8th graders).

The participation of each member of any organization is vital to its success. Such is the case in the GBMS Band program. Students learn to be part of a “team”, working towards a common goal.

The focus of the Daily Participation category is the development of the student’s interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. These skills include the ability to work with others, whether as a leader (section leader) or as a team member (e.g. member of the clarinet section). Also included are the ability to follow rules, to observe deadlines, to work toward performance goals, and to adapt to one’s environment (different classes, different conductors, different concert halls. etc.). The sense of pride and self-esteem that results from the student’s continued efforts in this area are invaluable.

Some of the more common reasons for not earning one’s Daily Participation points include:

  • Disturbing the class (e.g. talking or playing one’s instrument out-of-turn)
  • Failing to be prepared for class (no instrument, music, accessories, etc.)
  • Failing to be “on-time” for class or concert
  • Eating or chewing gum during class or concert

The effectiveness of any music program can be measured by the progress made by each individual student. Self-control, courtesy and dedication are essential from each participating student in order for the group to attain a superior level of performance.
